i want to go down slowly to avoid rebound or other problems. I no longer need xanax daily but only rarely when i get bad anxiety. What is safest way to go down slowly?
Simple, tell the prescribing physician your wish to do this, if it's been years, you should be put on a gradual decrease over a 4-6 or 5-7 month period to reduce the inevitable withdrawal and possible relapse of trying to do it faster or on your own. Under the supervision and aid of the Doc you'll be home free if you stick with the program. While that's a low dose, the behavioral dependence (by that I mean habit, not addiction) that's developed is also a huge part of the need for a long, gradual change.
Let your doctor know you want to get off xanax and the both of you come up with a taper plan that you're comfortable with. If you start feeling any withdrawal go back to the last dose you cut and stay on it until you feel stable, about 10-14 days then make a smaller cut. Try not to do no more than a 10% cut each time. When it becomes too small to cut your doctor can lead you to a compoud pharmacy to help. Just remember to let your doctor know everything while you taper very slowly.
I wish you the best of luck,
