I was Diogenes with mild depression. At 17 and now I'm 32 years old did not feel depressed at the time but I must of been I never had a problem over the years of my life unroll now. I just had my first panic attack Ever and it was scary a choking feeling can't sleep at night a have rapid heart beat headaches and so on I go see a psychiatrist soon to see what is causing the attack any feedback to see what they need to do or give me to help
Even though you only have mild depression, often antidepressants are used to treat anxiety disorders. There is the class of drugs called benzodiazepine of which Xanax is one. Both have their pros and cons. Antidepressants take awhile to work and have side effects at least in the beginning. Once the antidepressant is working it usually is taken once a day. Benzodiazepines are shorter acting in general, have to be taken more than once a day, and your body becomes dependent on them. You can not just stop a benzo abruptly without dangerous consequences.
Finding the right medication is trial and error as we all respond differently. It will, also, depend on what the doctor assesses to be what's best for you. There are coping skills that you can learn to help through the rough times. Deep breathing is probably the simplest. I, also, have found talk therapy helpful in overcoming my anxiety and depression. Finding what works for you can be a job, but worth the effort.
