Hello Joyce T, I have been on .5mg of Xanax 3 times a day myself (for many yrs.) I recently had an appointment with my doctor regarding this medication. He mentioned, since I have been on this this med so long that it could be a long process for me to get off this drug. It is very important to be under the care of your doctor, he will inform you how to taper off properly! Sometimes it can take up to a year, depending on the dosage & long term use. He may also add another drug to ease with the withdrawal symptoms. If you want to wean off, do it under the care of your doctor!
Stay well & good luck to you!
