For me, the worst of my illness has been severe clinical depression. I am diagnosed with Bipolar 2. Over16 years, I had six extremely debilitating 3 to 4 month long depressions, including psychosis. Since I started taking Lithium, I have not had any depressions! I feel it has saved the quality of my life. I wonder how often it is used mainly for treating depression?
Well I see Angela answered this one already. Seems her doctor told her yes, so it must be. From my own experience... all I know is that I went into the hospital several years back and I was bottomed out with depression and feeling a bit suicidal. They started me on Lithium along with Prozac. Personally... I do feel it was much more of the Lithium lifted my mood up because I had been on Prozac before and I only felt somewhat better for about 6 mths. before I started to fall back downward in depression. I felt extremely better within about 3 days in the hospital. I am Bipolar 1... but like you, I am much more depressed than I am manic. Hope it keeps working for you!
Lithium requires constant review of liver function, so some doctors don't like to prescribe it for that reason alone. However, it is known to very effective with bi-polar disease 1 - 2, but not so much for major depression. Regardless of the diagnosis, lithium is a good treatment people that tolerate it very well. Very happy to hear it is working for you. (You can infer that it works best for those that have never abused their liver and be correct).
Best of luck,
Been taking lithium for three years. I can't take antidepressants not sure why. Li helps a lot I was about to give up on everything but glad I found this. It did give me low thyroid but take a med now for it. It does bloat me up a little cause weight gain due to its calming effect. It has caused high white blood cell count. Helps sleep, better thinking, and agitation or impulsivity si ideation. Did not give me dry mouth. I take the extend release it is kinder to the stomach. I did stop it one time due to weight gain but I found my symptoms came back. Give it a try it a good drug.
I'm new to this group, and don't even know if I'm commenting correctly; but I have a question also if reference to the topic.
I've been on lithium 300 mgs twice a day for about 10 years. It is a wonderful drug for bipolar, which I am, but I also suffer from clinical depression and a side of ADHD lol. But the question I have is there anyone out there that has been prescribed a drug for depression to take while taking lithium that doesn't make you feel "bad" I've hard a hard time finding this combo. My dr tries new ones but they always make me feel weird. I hate to be the Guinea pig with drugs so I try to fight the depression, but there are times that it gets a lot worse than others. Anyone??
