I am really heartened by your positive accounts. I am about to start taking Fluoxetine for PMS and menopausal symptoms of anxiety and depression, but I am worried about needing it forever. I worry too that when I need to come off it at some point, it'll be very being difficult to do so. I understand it's very hard to stop taking as the withdrawal is hard, so the dose is reduced very slowly over time. This I find worrying. What's your experiences? Did you stop taking it after the menopause? Thanks in advace
Hi, Crusty! Nice name!
I'm going to guess your situation is caused by fluctuating, unstable hormone levels not defective neural pathways and receptors in your brain so there's no reason to suspect you'd need to be on Prozac forever. Besides, your condition is self-limiting if you get what I mean. Once those old hormones straighten out and subside you should be fine.
I won't tell you withdrawal is easy because some people do have a pretty hard time but for most people a structured tapering of your dose over a few weeks is uneventful. You don't hear from those people usually, but you hear a lot from the handful that had problems. And cold turkey is out of the question.
Okay, personal experience. I had to stop a similar anti-depressant twice for unrelated medical reasons and both times I was off in a week without even a tremor. I've also tried many different antidepressants, including Prozac, looking for the one that would work best for me. I never had a problem with any of them.
I hope this helps a little and good luck with your decision and treatment! WCV
I wouldn't worry about coming off Prozac before you even begin taking it. Asking about coming off is a good question. You and your doctor will gently taper you off Prozac when the time is right. I have tapered off several drugs including Effexor, Paxil, Baclofen, Soma, and Valium. It is easy so long as you write down your tapering instructions and follow them to a T. I bet you are going to be FINE !!!
All the best, Tony
I have found no problems coming off of Prozac or Zoloft etc at this point it should not even be a worry Just as WildcatVet said we always here from people with negitive people but you almost never here from the ones that have no problems which is a huge amount of people you just look at it as doing the same thing as going on this medication. You well be fine when the time comes, those the have had the most problems are the ones that try and do it themselves. or cold turkey you well be fine.I would get started and not even worry about it this is well worth the relief for what you are taking this for. Stay positive you well be just fine.
