I am doing a case study for a nursing class and I cant find any information saying that it would be bad, but I also haven't found any saying that is ok either. my approach to the study is cure the alcoholism as well as the serotonin decrease at the same time to bring back stability in the pt daily life... any help or insight would be sooooo appreciated!!!
Use the online interactions database here and you can add drugs, remove them etc. You're a student, you'll work it out. :-)
There are no interactions between these two drugs: https://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=917-482,2296-1524 If you are still concerned, consult a pharmacist and cite their comments in your case study. Treating alcoholism and depression/anxiety called comorbidity or another term is dual diagnosis is critical in care of some people.
If you're taking nursing courses, I feel I need to correct you. The word is prescribe not perscribe. Many people who drink are self medicating because they are depressed. If there is any hope to get them off alcohol the depression has to be dealt with. You cannot cure alcoholism, you can stop the person from drinking, but they will always be an alcoholic. Antabuse doe not always work for a person. Many will stop taking it so they can drink on weekends, then go back on it. There are newer ones, like vivitrol that is a time release shot.
Topamax is very good for all impulse control issues, is a mood stabilizer and can be taken with Effexor. I take it for Trigeminal Neuralgia but have also had binge eating disorder my whole life (50 yrs). Since I have been taking it I have no interest in food, clothes shopping or drinking. I did give up drinking some years ago, antabuse did nothing, but it was always in the back of my mind Since taking Topamax all cravings are gone. The only problem with it is though is it has to be brand name or consistently the same generic as there is up to a 40% difference between brand name and generic. You will need to research that yourself. I have just spent 5 days in bed vomiting, (the other end), hallucinating and pins & needles over my entire face , hands, arm's, feet and legs. The pharmacist told me all generics are the same. I went to see my Dr and he said never buy generic Topamax. It is poison all over the world. But the best medicine for impulse control.
I take 125 mg of Antabuse and 150 mg of Effexor. I have taken as much as 500 mg of Antabuse
Going to a doctor that fully didn't understand the harshness on your liver I had a bad reaction from everything from deodorant to conditioner with 500 that was enough to scare me so I just take 125. But I had no interactions on either dose. A sidenote Effexor has to be taken on a regular basis it's one of the harshest SSRIs to come off of sometimes if you even missed one dose you feel it by the afternoon and cry for no reason at all but it's the only SSRI that has helped with my depression and amxiety. Tried them all.
