This is my second month on Opana. I've been on some kind of opiate for 16 years. Chronic Nerve pain, arthritis of spine, herinated disc, etc. Also Fibro, IBS, Cervical and Lumbar radialopathy and others. One day I missed my 2pm pill of Opana and after 12 hours went into the strongest pain flare-up, to the point that I could not handle it. My pain doctor wants me to stop Opana two days befor surgery. Why & how???
Will Opana ER 10mg x 4 & Oxycondone 60mg x 4 a day interfer with an upcoming neck surgery?

July 6, 2011 UPDATE:I met with surgeon, he said: do not stop taking opana er before surgery scheduled for tomorrow. Take all pain medications up to time of entering hospital....I'm having a cervical dyscetemy & fusion on C3, removal of existing plate and screws from previous operation and a small piece of bone taken from my hip. They assured me I will have plenty of pain meds for recovery........will post later..............
You are obviously dependent on the opiates which you sound like you need. The Opana ER won't necessarily interfere with the upcoming surgery, the only thing I can think of is the pain doctor wants to be certain the medicine works for the pain after surgery. I would not cut back 40mgs total a day of the Opana cold turkey. I'm assuming the doctor still wants you to take the Oxycodone just not take the Opana?
I would recommend if the doctor wants you to be off the Opana for some reason, which you would have to ask him as to why, then you begin to taper slowly now. You could cut back by one pill a day spacing the others every six hours (not go 12 hours without) for a week, then reduce again to 2 a day spacing every 8 hours for a week, then one a day for a week. Do you have that much time before the sugery?
Just my thoughts. Maybe it would be best to discuss this further with the doctor explaining what you have told us here and get his reasoning.
I have been on a Fentanyl patch 100mc right up to my past surgery with no problems, it's not like the opana is a blood thinner, it should not be a problem. Are you really taking 60 mg of oxy 4 times a day? I'm taking 100 mg of oxy contin @ 12 hrs. Plus 30 mg oxy ir 4 times a day, I wasn't sure you could go to 60mg of oxy?
Thanks for your help,
I would strongly recommend you go back to your pain doc and talk with him/her before the surgery, even if it means rescheduling the surgery. Your doctor needs to know what happened when you missed the one dose of OpAnA. As things are now if you stop taking it 2 days before surgery you will be in too much pain to have the surgery. The thinking is that your constant pain meds treat your chronic pain but do not treat acute pain, such as from an accident or a surgery. You will need additional pain meds for that, take them for a short while for the surgery pain then gradually get off of them as the surgery pain recedes. I would talk with your doctor and make sure they understand the effects of what they are asking you to do. Perhaps they just need a reminder of how strong your constant pain is. Best wishes -
