Hi, AJ! I think your wife should see her doctor about this. There are two types of depression, situational and clinical. The symptoms are the same but one is in response to a life situation ~ death, divorce, job loss, etc. The other, clinical depression, is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and this requires treatment with medications and/or talk therapy.
Her wanting to isolate is a big concern. This isn't the time for trying to assess *blame* because it's probably no one's *fault*.
Try to convince your wife to see a doctor, who may even want to refer her to a specialist. It's worth it ~ neither of you has to live this way.
