family member given gabapentin for post operative care, said it was for phantom pain of lower leg amputation
Gabapentin works quite well for any kind of nerve pain (which phantom pain is). I know that it is classed as an anti-convulsant and this throws a lot of people off but it has been used for many years to help with nerve pain, like neuropathies, phantom limb pain and sciatica etc.
Dear Kiddly... sorry to hear of your brother's amputation. When an extremity is amputated the nerve endings at the point where the leg was amputated are still "alive," therefore the brain still thinks that the part that was amputated is still there. This goes on for a period of time... 6months-one year sometimes. So your brother may have pain in his toes, for example, even though they are not there. This is called phantom limb pain. Gabapentin is a medication used to treat nerve pain, therefore it will be treating the "phantom pain" that is present.
I hope this answers your question.
All my best... pup
I am a below the knee "amp", I take Gabapentin, (also known as "Neurontin'). Its supposed to help with nerve pain. My opion on this is not to put this med down. But as far as it helping my "nerve" pain... its questionable. Anyone who suffers from phamton pain would tell u ' when it comes, it comes'!!! & theres no mistaking IT HURTS!! Mine always seem to come in a set of threes back to back. My pc doctor told me that when it comes again, to get dryer sheet. Place it on the bottom of my stump and not think he's crazy that it really would work. & guess what it really did work! Anyone taking this med should go online and investigate about it. It's amazing pill , it works for several ,several reasons. It helps me more my depression than anything. I've tried the medication lyrica, it didn't work out for me. Next time it happens try the dryer sheets I promise it does work!
