Took my husband to clinic today to try to get our life back but they want him to go to "classes" first once a week for one month. I just don't know if I (or he) has the patience to wait. I was really hopeful for the first time in a long time but a month seems like so long when we're living with this addiction. (I am not on opiates but I have to deal with his addictive behavior of doing desperate things to get his fix.)
Learning about addiction and the reasons why one turns to drugs to help them cope is very important. Addiction is a two part problem. There is the physical addiction which you can treat with the medication like Suboxone and then there is the mental part which requires therapy. The clinic wants to be sure to cover both bases to insure your husband's success in getting and STAYING clean. The counseling really is a critical piece and I believe it to be well worth the effort.
Hang in there girl, the addiction didn't occur over night and unfortunately the recovery is going to take time too, but it is well worth it!!
Laurie is right. Treatment with subs varies from dr to dr and clinic to clinic, starting the addiction therapy is the right thing to do. Subs treatment is supposed to have MANDATORY addiction counseling but many many subs providers skip this. If a patient does Not do the counseling, that is a dangerous short cut tha almost surely results in relapse. Starting it a month ahead of time is a new one on me, most require it when you start subs, however this may help much before he starts. If they offer a support group for spouses, go for that, it will help. If not, AL ANON does, it will help you. Best of luck, pattishan
