Recently the clinic I go to changed to a new pain doctor. I told him I had been on Neurontin and other "seizure meds" before and not only did they not work but also caused me more euphoria, loss of balance, and digestive problems than the other medications I take. I told him I didn't want to use any type of anti seizure medication as I don't believe it should be prescribed for RSD/CRPS or Chronic Pain. Anyone else on this type of medication for chronic pain? If so, does it help or do you have bad symptoms that are not worth the risk of taking it?
Why did my doctor prescribe this for chronic pain?

I have had RSD/CRPS since a MVA almost 11yrs ago. I am on a low dose of Oxycontin for pain and have remained on the same dosage for almost 9 of 11yrs. I take Percocet for breakthrough pain. I take Soma for muscle spasms and pain relief, Xanax for Anxiety and Nefazadone for Depression.
I hate medications and take the least amount possible even trying to take less than what is prescribed knowing I have a Chronic Pain disease with no cure, dangerous medications, and know I have to "LIVE with pain" not just use medications thinking it could ever take away all my pain.
Why prescribe Zonegran; an anti seizure med for chronic pain? I just do not like the side effects nor do I want anymore medications at this time.
Dear RSDHurtzme,I am unclear as to the medicine you mean is in fact the neuroontin or something else. Please let me know and perhaps I might be able to help out. Also with neurontin, motrin, as well as certain other types of anti-inflammotory meds. There are benefits to be had with regular maintenance.Just be sure to always eat something before taking any anti-inflammatory!s as all of them can cause severe stomach upset as well as the other symptoms you mentioned. Also you may have been on different meds for maintaing your meds previous to this and this may work now with your current pain management meds. Let me know,I wish you all the best. Sincerely Yours,Kathysbest
A lot of nero doctors use Seizure meds for RSD. I am on one from my doctor now. These medications work on the nerve resepters as I understand it. So they don't fire so many times In 24/7.
I do have friend who can't take some of these meds . You may be one who can't take nerontin. Ask him about other a different med for this. Side affects from our meds are impotant to watch... I never just say it is ok to egnore them. My health matters and so does yours
Im currently on neurontin and tramadol for chronic shoulder pain. I found out (the hard way) that neither of them work very well ALONE, but when i take both they really help. Neurontin is not only a anti-seizure med, but its also a neuropathic pain reliever as well, kind of like lyrica. I think its really good stuff
