Antiacids are given prior to giving NSAID analgesics to protect the stomach lining from the damaging effects of NSAIDS to the stomach lining. Proton pump inhibitors are usually what is used to protect the stomach lining from the effects of NSAIDS. NSAIDS are very hard on the stomach lining.
