Neurontin, Dylantin ... don't know the names of the others...
I would say Lyrica, it is newer than Neurontin and it does so much more. It is much more expensive but with insurance it is great to have. Some people have a bad reaction to it but the other one that is also one of my top bests is the Dylantin. It is what my mother uses and she has a morphine pain pump and tons of nerve pain. The Dylantin is the best one for her,. give it a try.
I have only been diagnosed with TN for just over a month now. I am still trying to get the carbamazepine under control. I have not tried any other medicines for TN yet. Every drug has its good and bad side. What may be safe for one person isn't safe for another. Work with your doctor on what is the most effective & safest medicine for you. What might work great for one person may not work at all for another, as each of us is different. Just keep asking your doctor questions about what is right for you.
I have been suffering with trigeminal neuralgia for going on 10 years. They have finally hit on a conbination of 2700 mg of gabapentin (900 mg three times a day) and 150 mg of Lamictal twice a day. This is the first time I have been pain free in all this time. It' going on three months now and only hope this is the answer.
I've had what the doctors think is trigeminal neuralgia for several weeks now. The first medication which did help my TN pain was Oxycarbazepin, generic for Trileptal. But the Trileptal caused very bad to severe migraines which I have problems with as well, but far worse with this med. Plus I was off balance with very blurred vision and great confusion to do the simplest things. I fell twice on our wood floors and got injured. So now I am to take Lyrica as needed basis. But the doses prescribed have caused me to feel "drunken" in the past. So I may need something else.
