My husband has been taking suboxone for over a year now. His last dosage was 8 mg. However, last month he had a tooth pulled and developed "dry socket". He took up to 16 mg a day to ease the pain from his tooth. As a result of this he ran out of his monthly script. He called his doctor to get some relief and all the doctor did was chide him for using up the script. As a result of this, he has been "cold turkey" off the suboxone for four days now. He is in extreme pain. He feels very weak. He has been sleeping most of the time but even then his pain is very acute. My question is, "how long will this continue for him and what can I do to help him?" I feel like the doctor has failed him and it is so hard to see him suffering. Any suggestions would help. Thanks
Dear Al, welcome to the site. Your husband's dr is being hard headed, vindictive and unfair. If a subs patient develops a pain problem, the easiest and best way to fix it is to take more suboxone. My suggestion may not be one you wish to hear, call the dentist, and explain that your husband is on the suboxone program and how the dr has failed to treat your husband fairly and your dentis may call the dr to explain and/or he may simply give him some opiate based pain med to get him comfortable. There is a mouth rinse called BIOTENE, that treats dry mouth and other mouth irritation, be sue to ask the dentist if it might help. It is available over the counter at drugstores and mass retail stores, it ranges in price from $5.99 to $9 depending on where you get it, your dentist may also have trial sample packs. when I was on suboxone and in group therapy, a fellow subs member had to have his wisdom teeth extracted and he was given more suboxone. This was also the advice the addiction counselor gave to the oral surgeon and the young man. I am hoping your dentist will plead your husbands case and help out as well. The wd from suboxone may last from 2 weeks to 2 months, I hate saying that, but honesty is the best policy and your husband really did nothing wrong, his dr is being unreasonable. I am adding your husband to my prayer list, please please update us. We care around here. Patti
