I was diagnosed with BP II after I had been on antidepressants for years. I had no previous severe depression and no hypomanic episodes before I was on Effexor. I'm curious how many other people were diagnosed after they had been on an antidepressant.
Altho i am not a dr or bi-polar, i have had clinical depression and taken anti-d's and been to years of group and individual therapy and one counselor made mention of chemicals causing bi-polarity, drinking alcohol can too. If i am not mistaken,Effexor, Abilify and Pristiq all work on serontonin and norepinephrine in the brain, not just serontonin like other anti-d's. If you switched 2 Effexor from another anti-d, and didn't really need the change in your norpenephrine, maybe that caused the feelings of mania or the sudden diagnosis of bi-polarity. This is just a suggestion from a patient who did feel mania myself on the starter half dose of Effexor, had 2 stop it quickly. Please talk to your dr and therapist and ask them why suddenly they diagnosed bi-polarity and whether a change of meds are needed and how to do that safely and comfortably. pattishan61
I was diagnosed over 20 years ago. I was so manic I don't remember lots of things from meds, doctors, events that have happened in the past 20 yrs. From what the psych and info I have read antidepressants do sometimes bring up the hyper side of someone who is depressed. I think that maybe there were signs of bipolar that you may not have noticed. If it was me in your shoes I would ask close family that you have shared this info with if they noticed any other signs that do relate to the hyper side of bipolar. I would also ask the doctor that diagnosed you with this how s/he came to this diagnose. It takes time for a trained professional to determine if someone is bipolar and even harder when someone has severe depression first. Please note i'm not an expert or claim to be trained in this just offering some thoughts as to what I have experinced and what others have shared with me. I wish you the best in finding out the finally dianose of your illness and always here to help and share experinces.
