This is the only drug that will relieve my diarrhea. I cannot find it and the drug stores deny being able to get it. This is frightening. With it I am not housebound and can have a normal life. Can anyone help me find it?
Can anyone tell me where I can find Paregoric?
Added 10 Oct 2010:
The drug is paregoric. It has become dreadfully hard to find. Can anyone tell me a source? I have surgically induced Short Bowel Syndrome and this is the only drug of any kind that has ever relieved the diarrhea.
You could perhaps write to the following manufacturing companies:
Aligen Independent Laboratories Inc, Alpharma USPD, Cenci, H.R. Labs Inc, Halsey Drug Company Inc, IVAX Corporation, Interstate Drug Exchange Inc, Major Pharmaceuticals Inc, Moore, H.L. Drug Exchange Inc, Morton Grove Pharmaceuticals Inc, Purepac Pharmaceutical Company, Qualitest Pharmaceuticals Inc, Sandoz Inc, Truxton Company Inc, UDL Laboratories Inc, United Research Laboratories/Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, Veratex Corporation, Watson Pharmaceuticals, they all manufacture the formulation or please talk to a pharmacist for more details, take care, be well & safe.
You have to have a prescription to obtain this drug. At this time the FDA has a hold on it but your pharmacist may be able to make you some. I have short bowell syndrome and have been taking paregoric for many years. Since it has been hard to get, and is high in alcohol, my doctor has given me another prescription for Tincture of Oium. This you take as drops. Both are effective but it also depends on how much bowell you have. I have a great pharmacy that now compounds Paregoric for me. Itis the next best thing. I hope you find something that works.
Capt. Shaw - I am in the same boat. I contacted a manufacturer, and they told me the FDA was cracking down on drugs they didn't approve (paregoric having been around a lot longer than the FDA) and they had to stop making it. I contacted my congressman and got a response today that I didn't quite understand (I will call them back Monday 2/28/11). I don't think their response agreed with the drug company's response to me. I suffer from IBS, and I am hysterical at not having my paregoric to carry around with me. I only usually use about12-16 oz. per year, which is not excessive, but it is the only thing that works immediately. I am going to contact some of the drugs listed to your response. I realize that was months ago, but have you had any success?
My parmacist has been manufacturing Paragoric for me the last 4 months. It works just as well. The only difference i find is in the taste, which isn't so great to begin with. I am slowly weaning myself off as it is hard on the liver. On the other hand, I have increased my inake of tincture of opium which works the same but without the alcahol. I hope you and anyone else that needs to use this can talk to their pharmacist for help. If there are other ideas on what to do, i would love to know them as well.
I know this is an old question, first some background info. Since 1961 until they took it off the market I was on Paregoric for what they then called "Spastic Colon" now they call it "IBS" Paregoric was used by me about 3 times a month 1-2 teaspoons in a 8 oz glass of hot water with sugar added. It calmed down my colon so it wouldn't twist etc, Sometimes the pain was so bad I passed out. Since they took it off the market my GI tried several meds that did not subside the pain at all. Finally I turned to alcohol as a medication (Mind you I never drank before) I only used it when I was in pain. though it never entirely stopped the pain, it did take the edge off. (Brandy, Vodka etc) Finally someone with IBS asked me if I ever tried Absinthe, apparently it has herbs in there that help with IBS pain. I was skeptical at first because I heard bad things about it.
Well last week after laying in bed with intense pain for 2 days; I finally bought a bottle under the brand name Absente. It is not cheap. but today the pain started up again. I used it the same way I use to use Paregoric. Within 10 minutes my pain subsided 90%. I can live with that. I hope this works for someone else.
