Whats the difference between capsules and tablets?

Tablets are usually like a powder that is pressed tightly together when manufactured. Capsules are usually made out of gelatin type substance that is then filled with the meds. I take Effexor XR and the capsules are extended release,while regular Effexor is a tablet form that it immediate release.
