Im taking oxycodone for my migrains and looking for a replacment medication.
(Currently undergoing adhd, insomnia, anxiety/GAD/panic attacks)
My PMP told me that opiates are not a good treatment for migraines. I'sure the oxycodone kills the pain, but you want something preventative. Go to a migraine specialest. He/she will explain the triggers, relaxation techniques and prescribe the right medication. My husband suffers from migraines, and was prescribed Immatrex 100 mg. They really help, the minute he thinks he's getting a migraine he takes an Immatrex and everything is good in about 15 min., Hope this helps... Sweepea
I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from migraines. I think the answer that Sweatpea gave to you was great. Just wanted to add that seeing either a neurologist or going to a headache clinic (The Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago is great) would be a good idea. If you are taking any ssri's immetrex can cause your heart to race (I confirmed that with my pharmacist). Have you ever tried topamax? My Brother and Daughter both suffer from bad migraines and my Brother has to give himself some kind of shot in the stomach once a week I think and my Daughter was given a special diet which includes just one cup of coffee per day (too much caffeine is not good either). I wish I could be of more help but I'm taking suboxone now and like you 2 years ago I was taking hydrocodone once in awhile for headaches and it helped but you don't want to get addicted to an opiate. Good luck to you and best wishes :) Larsy1966
Hello again Hernandaz, I'd have to agree on the Imitrex. It works by dilating the blood vessels. My daughter suffered terribly from them. Back then, they gave her the take-home injections. But I think nowadays it's pill form only. They do work fast. Some of the opiates they first tried, gave her worse headaches. Also use lots of ice on the neck and forehead. Talk with your doc about migraine prevention. Most can tell when one is coming on. Preventing them is key! But yes, check out the Imitrex. It might work well for you!!
Immitrex shots are the ONLY answer! They are very simple to give to yourself. Go to your doctor when you have a severe migraine have them show you how to inject it(very simple), & get a prescription. I had migraines so bad 24/7 6 weeks at a time for years! Was even checked for a brain tumor. Had one on an appointment day with my rhuematologist, & he immediately gave me a shot, turned the lights off & had me lay down for 20 minutes. Walla! It was gone! I found that every time I got one & used the shot they got fewer & further between. Within less than a year(that was in 1994) they were gone completely! Haven't had one since. Now my daughter has them really bad & she got the pills, but finally gave up on it & still suffers. That's why I suggest the shots. Be aware tho' if you have any heart problems. Talk this out with your doctor. No need to suffer. Good luck & let us know how you are doing!
