Ambien (zolpidem tartrate) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat short-term insomnia in adults.

Ambien CR (zolpidem tartrate extended-release tablets) is a prescription sleeping medication that has been licensed to treat insomnia in adults.

Basically, Ambien is supposed to help you fall asleep. And for a lot of people, it works. But some people need help staying asleep as well. Ambien CR has a controlled release so that you don't get the medicine all at once, that way they can continue working for you throughout the night.

Does that make sense? It's not a perfect description but it's the basic idea of it.
