My doctor started me on Depakote ER 500mg tablets, 3 tablets @ night = 1500mg is that alot to be starting out? He also added 900mg of Lithobid, 2mg of Kolonpin, and 600mg of Seraquel... I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar II and this is my first time taking these medications... it just seems like so much to start off with.
The initial dose of Depakote ER should be 25mg/kg/day. So I would need to know how much you weigh in order to figure out the appropriate dosage. Did he increase the Lithobid and the Seroquell or are those new too?
For seroquel the dose selection is as follows:—When used as monotherapy or adjunct therapy (with lithium (lithobid) or divalproex (depakote)), Seroquel should be initiated in twice daily doses totaling 100 mg/day on Day 1, increased to 400 mg/day on Day 4 in increments of up to 100 mg/day in twice daily divided doses. Further dosage adjustments up to 800 mg/day by Day 6 should be in increments of no greater than 200 mg/day. Data indicate that the majority of patients responded between 400 mg/day to 800 mg/day. The safety of doses above 800 mg/day has not been evaluated in clinical trials.
The lithobid is generally prescribed in two divided doses of 900mg each. So starting on 900mgs maybe is not unusual though you may need to adjust. Also, be sure to have your blood levels checked frequntly particularly in the early phases of treament.
I have a difficult time with a doctor prescribing too many new medications at the same time because it is very difficult to determine which med may be causing adverse effects. That being said the seroquel is often prescribed along with lithobid OR depakote. The dosage, if this is a starting dose, is exceptionally high for the seroquel.
If you decide to take all four of these medications please be prepared to be very sleepy well into the next day after taking. Do not drive or operate heavy machine until you see how you respond.
I'm not sure about the other meds you were prescribed but i just wanted to share that i also was prescribed seroquel recently,i had to start off with 150mg as the 300mg he origanally prescribed was too strong.Thats me speaking for myself-you could well be different, but i also found the 150mg very strong and be prepared to be very sleepy from that med alone the following day.
It seems alot to me that he prescribed all that for your first dose of meds, but then again i am no doc or physc,
I wish you well and hope the meds work for you.If you're still concerned maybe ring back and share with him your worries,he may switch you to lower doses and gradually bring you up..
Take care and let us know how you're doing
Ive been put on many meds when I was sectioned over 10years ago now, I cannot recall what they were as they had me out of my mind, I was in a hospital ward at the time so they thought they knew what they were doing to me with giving me the drugs, or so I would assume, before being discharged I was put onto Lithium at a fairly high dose, it ruined my thyriod by making it underactive, also have now over 30 cysts on my liver, because I went toxic, so with the help and supervision of my GP I was discharged from the psychiatrist because I didnt have another episode in 5 years praise to God above.
Since then Ive been on anti depressants as I always suffered with the depression side of bipolar, but only since last year, I went high, due to a family issue, but thanks be to God again, I never went Manic High, but these past two months ive been diagnosed as 'Liabling' meaning going from high to low, crying and laughing, its been hard to live with as im sure you can understand or even empathize with.
I would imagine had I been prescribed all that amount of meds would be a big amount, but we are all made differently, praise God on high, and we each react differently to different meds.
I was put on Seraquel 300mg SR and was floored immediatly, two days and nights I spent like that even wanting to die, and me a born again Christian woman, that's how bad that drug effected me, but that was me.
Since that my psychiarist has prescribed me with Depakote 250 x 3 times a day, if you read my story on this forum you'll read the full description of it all. Dont want to repeat all that, and I know you wouldnt want to read it all again either.
Guess thats about all I can add to your question dirtybee, strange user name.
