Depending on how long & what types of pain meds a women is prescribed has a lot to do with this real answer! The following goes like this,,if a women gets pregnant and she's been on pain meds such as percocet, oxycontin, lortab, opana, etc. They will prescribe her methadone which sounds kinda odd, but its not! They do this because of many reasons. First off the fetus is at the early stages of life,,and they do not won't to just take a women off pain meds they've been on cold turkey,,it will cause her to have more complications, and its very dangerous for the child. Also, research shows that methadone is 1 of the most safest drugs for a pregnant women that's been on pain pills for a length of time! They will take in consideration the amounts & the strength of the pain meds she has been on also. They will slowly wean her down,,and I do mean slowly thru the 9month period! So,,this is the honest answer, and if the female has been on a lot. Of pain meds for a length of time,,its very likely they may keep her on the methadone till birth, and when the child is born,,they will then more than likely haftto keep the baby for probably a week or so,,just to wean the baby off of the meds the mother is on,,and they do this very slowly and safely! Studys show that methadone is the safest drug for any pregnant mother to be on and willl cause no side effec,ts, or problems with the newborn,,will not give birth defects!! I hope this helps,,but this is the truth! God Bless and I hope everything works out great!!
Methadone has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. No increase in congenital defects has been observed with methadone treatment although withdrawal symptoms occur in 60% to 90% of infants born to mothers on chronic methadone therapy. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Methadone should only be given during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
chris,
What about Subutex... in plain english Dr. Christine!!! ???
SL
It's benefit/risk regarding pregnancy? Do you mean suboxone? I just added the info on Aarons answer (which was the direct and right one) regarding Subutex and pregnancy.

Aromatase is the major enzyme that metabolizes buprenorphine in the human placenta.
Buprenorphine has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Post-implantation losses, acephalus, omphacele, dystocia, and statistically insignificant skeletal abnormalities have been reported in animal studies. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Buprenorphine use during pregnancy has been associated with neonatal withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus.
Buprenorphine Breastfeeding Warnings
Buprenorphine and norbuprenorphine concentrations determined from ten random breast milk samples collected over four successive days from a lactating woman during buprenorphine maintenance therapy ranged from 1.0 to 14.7 ng/mL and 0.6 to 6.3 ng/mL, respectively. Drug exposure to the infant was considered to be low. In animal studies, a lack of milk production was observed.

Buprenorphine is excreted into human milk in low concentrations. The manufacturer recommends against breast-feeding during buprenorphine therapy.
