Janetdunn,
They actually are similar meds. Alprazolam (Xanax) is an antianxiety med with short to intermediate acting properties. Lorazepam (Ativan) is a med used for antianxiety, as a sedative and hypnotic; its effects are short acting. Both are benzos as well.
Alprazolam is used for anxiety, panic disorders, anxiety with depression, and insomnia (in some cases).
Lorazepam is used for anxiety, insomnia, irritability in psychotic disorders, and for alcohol withdrawl.
Hope this helps.
