I have had lifelong sleep issues and here are some things I have found that work for me and a few others I have told. One simple cheap easy way is Deep Breathing Exercises. This may sound looney but I have been doing it with success for about 22 years. You lie down and take slow, deep breaths while picturing the air your inhaling going all the way to your toes and then coming slowly back out as you exhale. Relax each muscle conciously as the air passes by it - as in , start with your toes then feet then ankles then calves etc.- and do this all the way up your body with your eyes closed and preferably no light or noise which make for very poor sleeping conditions. Over time your body will automatically start to relax in this way every night. I know, Crazy! But true!! Also I have found that common over the counter Benadryl or the store brand, taken about one hour before bedtime has also helped and has no long term or next morning side effects that a cup of Java won't take care of . I have tried every sleep aid on the market for the last 25 years and they all leave you feeling low and half dead the next morning. There was even one which made me afraid I would not be able to wake up and made me feel so bad I had to call in sick. I know it sounds old fashioned but a cup of cocoa or sleepytime tea around bedtime helps too. I mean our parents and grandparents were'nt complete idiots! Also a lot of physical activity during the day helps so if you have CPB (couch potato butt) or just have to sit at work all day, try a long walk home or take the kids or pets out to the park. The fresh air and excercise will do wonders. I know some people that even this does'nt help and those people should consider a doctor or keep trying OTC's until they find a cure that works.
