The primary reasons for depakote usage are seizures, migraine headaches, and mood disorders. It does not seem to be cited as a treatment for mental retardation - unless it is the case perhaps that the person is also at risk for seizures. the accompanying literature for divalproex states that it may also "be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor".
