I found a note in one of my phytotherapeutic books that Polygala vulgaris (in German: Gemeine Kreuzblume) and Polygala virginina are contenting Gaultherin and Polygalin. The medical effects of both herbs are described as equivalent: sedating coughing, releasing bronchial secretion caused by saponines, and slightly diuretic.
Gaultheria yunnanensis has been shown to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Polygala may have many medicinal uses. See http://www.globalherbalsupplies.com/herb_information/polygala_tenuifolia.htm
