We decided to try generic guanfacine for our 9 yr old son's adhd. Starting at .5 mg am and .5 mg afternoon. Just wondering if any one else is using guanfacine (not Intuniv) in this way and what dosages and times are you taking it?
No but please from a mother to a mother would you please let me know how it goes. My son is 9yrs.old with adhd and he is on the controlled substance adderall and I would really like to know if this new medicine works so i can get my son off amphetamines. I hope to hear from you soon please please let me know how it goes.
Well, so far, (it has been only 5 days and they recommend at least two weeks) it has made a significant positive difference. He was on Concerta 40 mg. (also a controlled amphetamine) He does seem a bit more tired, but that may also be laid back or relaxed. The Concerta made it nearly impossible to go to sleep before 10 pm and he ate constantly... even in the middle of the night... it was horrible going to bed and arguing about him sneaking around to find food. Mornings were devastating trying to get him ready for school. So, in this regard I would recommend trying the generic guanfacine 1 mg. It is very cheap $10 in comparison to the Intuniv $400+ . Now remember this is summer not school, so I don't know how school will go. He is going to bed on his own, no arguing, and sleeping all night. He has an appetite nearly all day (typical 9 yr old boy). Seems to be in control during the day, but the jury is still out on whether this will work while he is in school. I will try to update as the summer goes on. Please let me know if you try it.
hi i want to advise you of an uncommon reaction to untuniv, that my son is experiencing. first he was extremely tired, then he was lethargic, then seizure like symtoms, now after taking him off slowly, he is having strong uncontrollable body movements. it maybe named dystonic reactions. but because "intuniv" is so new, and fda only studied for 9 weeks, no doctor will admit this reaction is from this medicine. so if anyone out there can advise, please do so. i am desperate for advice, and questions.
My son was taking guanfacine with good results at 11 yrs old. he started out with .5mg daily and stopped at 1mg daily. the dr. said that it was a smaller does but seemed to be enough for Justin. Justin stopped taking it because he stareda new medication for his epilepsy and that medication worked well to treat both conditions so we stopped the guanfacine. My son did experience mild constpation while on it however that was easily treated with diet and metamucil. He liked the orange flavor.
I aslo have a niece and nephew on it. she takes 1mg or 2mg daily and my nephewe takes 3mg in the am and 2mg at noon.
