My doctor feels 30 mg is enough but I still have pain.
What can I add to 30mg oxycontin 2X daily to take care of break-through pain?

Hey carriemoe,
The drug usually prescribed with oxycontin for break through pain would be hydrocodone such as Lortab or Norco but these require a prescription form the doctor. Some good old fashion acetominophen (Tylenol) may enhance the oxycontin enough to solve the problem. I would give it a try.
Best wishes,
Laurie
You didn't mention the condition(s) you're treating. Personally, I've been involved in numerous auto accidents, have spinal stenosis, curvature of the spine, and osteoporosis, I also have FMS & CFS. So along with the Oxycontin, I use muscle relaxants that helps me with stiffness and an occasional Xanax that decreases the anxiety that often comes with pain. The Xanax also helps with my difficult to control blood pressure, but a lot of doctors refuse to prescribe the Rx because of its' highly addicting properties. Also, gabapentin and anti-depressants I understand are sometimes helpful. But both make me violently ill, so I can't speak for them.
I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis and recently had rods inserted along the lumbar area of my spine so am still recovering from that so am dealing with both acute and chronic conditions. I am currently seeing a rheumatologist but perhaps should see a pain management clinic. carriemoe
Pain management would be a good idea. I have rods and screws in my lumbar spine, and a plate in my neck. Those are tough surgeries to recover from. It took me awhile to get moving after them. Also, along the same lines as the gabapentin (which is also called Neurontin) there is Lyrica, Cymbalta and I believe the name is Savella? Which are all approved for helping with fibromyalgia pain, and are not narcotics. I know I've found Lyrica to help a lot. Take care -
I take OxyContin along with an immediate release oxycodone for breakthrough. I also take two Aleve (naproxen) tabs every day sometimes twice a day but at least once per day. My Dr would much rather see me supplement with the OTCs than the opioids. The Aleve helps with inflammation where OxyContin does not. I have degenerated discs, a herniated disc, and facet joint problems so I need the anti-infammatory effects. I find it helps a lot. Ask your Dr about taking acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen along with your OxyContin, not the girl who does intake for your Dr. She is likely not a nurse and probably doesnt know as much about medicine as she thinks she does. Many people who work for Drs in the office are NOT nurses. They are technicians or medical assistants and only have a few weeks of formal training. They do not have the rigorous training that nurses go through. They should NOT be giving advice as to what medicines to take. They should be refering you to the Dr for those questions.

Thanks for your information. I was doing this but the nurse said I shouldn't do that. I don't understand why she was so worried because I'm on a low dose of oxycontin already. Two Adveil were helpful also.Take care, carla
Unless you are having problems with your stomach from the Advil, or with your liver from the acetaminophen, I wouldn't see any reason not to supplement with these. They are easier on the body than taking more narcotics, and not likely to escalate your dosage of Oxycontin. If they are helping and there is no other reason I would say give them a try. Also, you might consider doing some self-relaxation exercises to help bring your pain levels down, or learn yoga, do biofeedback and neurofeedback - mind over body exercises to teach your brain how to relax your body, as our bodies tend to tense up and we breath a lot shallower when we are in pain. Best wishes -
Thanks for the suggestions.
