Have been prescribed Endep for 4 fold reasons. 1--chronic cluster headaches; hopefully to replace Topomax due to side effects. 2--migraine prevention. 3--nerve end pain (gynae related). 4 sadness following death of parent/insomnia/stress/depression and anything else you might like to throw in. Never been on it before. 64yo, pretty determined to get my life back on track, have had rough 12 months with extended periods in hospital with headaches etc. Any of you had any experience with any of my problems and Endep? Bit worried re side effects--especially weight as have just battled to get weight down after war with prednisolone. (the only bonus from Topomax was side effect of weight loss) Would I be better going to any of the other support groups? Your help would be appreciated? Thanks from South Australia!
I first have to respond by saying that every person responds to drugs differently, so what may be right for one person may not be right for another. And we must also remember new meds must be given a minimum trial period of 2 weeks. That said, I took Amitriptyline several years ago for several reasons but mainly as a companion to my SSRI anti-depressant. It helped with my pain and sleeping problems due to depression. It worked to ease by headaches but never prevented them. I recently was put on Topamax because over the years by depression worsened as did my migraines to where I began to experience severe complex migraines. I would be in bed for days unable to move. Topamax has allowed me to get back to a somewhat normal live, when I feel a headache coming, it slowly goes away. No other medicine has done that for me. Support groups will put you in contact with people who are goiing through the same things as you are and help you have a better understand of your depression/stress/insomnia/migraines (because they all work hand-in-hand). But these conditions are caused the changes of chemical and blood flow in your brain, and the only thing that can truly treat that is mediation.
Hi Dusker, not sure this will help but some of it might. I had my first Migraine last year and was put on Amitriptyline for several months and it seemed to prevent the Migraines so I think it was good for me. You metioned nerve pain I take Lyrica for that and I take it at night time and it works really well also, Topomax didn't work for me but I was taken of it after only 2 weeks because of side effects whilst in the hospital recently whilst having Steroid treatment for a MS flare, which yes weight gain is such a problem with steroids and this is the first time my face has swollen and the first time I had spent 1 month being on the steroids and I am dreading as to how much this trip that I have just come home from is going to affect my weight. I also had DHE treatment for my Migraine which helps with the Migraine's. Amitriptyline didn't seem to have any side effects to speak of with me, but thse drugs really do affect people differently but don't let it stop you from trying it for yourself because it could be your wonder drug. Good luck.
