Some side effects with tolterodine, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to a doc. These include but are not limited to:

Severe constipation; Worsening of glaucoma; Difficulty passing urine; Confusion; An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia); Signs of an allergic ; reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, wheezing, and unexplained swelling.

Tolterodine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. In these studies, the most common side effects of tolterodine included:

Dry mouth -- in up to 35% of people; Headaches -- up to 7%; Constipation -- up to 7%; Dizziness or a spinning sensation (vertigo) -- up to 5%; Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 5%.

Other common tolterodine side effects, occurring in 1 to 4% of people, included:

Chest pain; ; Fatigue; Flu-like symptoms (such as fever, chills, or body aches); Diarrhea; Indigestion or heartburn; Painful urination; Dry skin; Joint pain; Drowsiness; Weight gain; Infection; Dry eyes; Problems focusing the eyes.
