My daughter is in another state and could not have it removed at 5 yrs because of some kind of infection at the time. She has never went back to MD. Lately having strange behavior that is not her normal and was wondering if it could be related to IUD or if anyone is aware of any studies past 5yr implant. I am really worried about her especially if it could be related to this IUD. Thanks for any replies!
I'm on my second Mirena and when it came to the end of the 5 years on my first one my Dr was very insistant that I have it romoved. He said I could get a serious infection if it wasn't removed. Also, there is no promise that it will be effective as a birth control after the 5 years. If she isn't using any other birth control then she could get pregnant. If she is using another form of birth control (especially the pill), perhaps some of the hormones from the Mirena are still being released and mixing badly with the hormones from the pill. Those are just some thoughts and and example of my experience. I believe they put a time on it for a reason. They have probably studied why it should only be in there for 5 years. But, like I said, I'm on my second one and my doctor said I can continue to replace them every 5 years on into menapause. She should probably go see her gyn. Good luck!
