26 yr. old male with severe brain damage, no speech, can't walk, but scoots or uses wheel chair. Having serious mood swings and not sleeping. Episodes used to be once or twice a yr. now several times weekly. Difficult to find Dr. who will treat. Could long term use of tegretol be part of the problem or could he be immune to it and be having seizure activity. Mother needs help.

I am 53 year old. When I was in my early 20s I started taking Tegretol. My blood had to be checked every 6 months. My Lab Tech told me I had Agranulocytosis. In my 30s, I became severely Anemic. (My Bone Marrow was checked) After being treated with Folic Acid and Iron Supplements, (and put on Dilantin), my Blood Count improved. I went back on Tegretol until my new Dr put me on Keppra. There is now a Black Box warning on Tegretol. My Blood Counts are improved. I never experienced Mood Swings, but I would watch CBP Levels. Anemia can feel depressing.
