I have Bipolar Type II and have been on Seroquel (200 mg initially then 200 mg XR) and Lamictal (200 mg twice daily) for years with adjunct anti-depressants added as needed for break through depression as well as clonazepam as needed for anxiety. As I understand it, I'm on a very low dose of Seroquel but the weight gain, drowsiness, and hunger are UNBEARABLE! Thirty two pounds of weight in three years. The drowsiness is even negatively affecting my marriage. My husband, despite his support for my disorder, does get frustrated by the 10 hours sleep/night PLUS a nap (or two) daily. Has the transition from Seroquel to Latuda gone well for most? From what I've read (and heard from another patient) this is a much preferable drug.
Hello Bipolar73. You're correct, your dose of seroquel is low. Was on it for several years and weight was an issue. Latuda might be a better drug for you, in as much as far as the appetite goes (much less) as well as less sleep. which are both plus's for you. Its a new drug, you know that, only just over a year old. Can't really add, much, reports of irritabilty when first starting the drug, but they disappear, level of, and you've the clonazepam to help you there. Go for it, wishing you a smooth change over. very best wishes to you ( I'm an insomniac and envy you the deep sleep).
I had to go off the Seroquel XR to Latuda and had to go off of that too due to it making me sick. You have to eat at least 350 calories and it got to the point that I thought that food was so that I had something to get sick with. It was not good for me and was put back on Depakote ER.
I am off seroquel xr and switched right off and on to Latuda. Crazy stuff. Doc says it's not a stimulant, it's just I'm off of seroquel xr and the change is due to seroquel xr being a strong sedative vs latuda not having the sedation effect. Took almost 3 weeks once starting latuda for me to fall asleep naturally. Latuda takes 1 hour to kick in at night.
As the weight and appetite issue goes
Feeling like it's a stimulant
Feeling like I'm happy not soooo drowsy but now I'm ready to get up at 4am ready for bed by 9pm.
I have been on Seroquel for about 15 years. Recently was put on the XR at 400 mg.
I asked to be switched to Latuda as I heard good things!
So far, in one week, I've gone down to 200 XR Seroquel and take 40mg Latuda in the morning.
I've found Latuda makes me uplifted and in a better, more pleasant mood :)
Also, it makes me a little restless, but by the afternoon I feel better and I can sleep at night. I have only one night I was up to 6:30 am and finally fell asleep. Now I feel good.
I still have to wean off the rest of the 200XR Seroquel... so I'll come back and post how that goes.
I asked my doctor to wean me slowly though to 100, then 50, then 25...
