but have recently read about its use as a sleeping aid. I had been prescribed this medication from my U.S. doctor for a back problem. Is this medication a barbituate?, and if so how can I be sure not to overdose myself using it as a sleeping aid?
For a start you should only use Flexeril for the purpose it was prescribed -for your back problem.
If you need help sleeping you should talk with your doctor - there are safer options.
Flexeril contains Cyclobenzaprine - a skeletal muscle relaxant. It is not a barbiturate. Drowsiness is a common side effect.
The usual dosage of Flexeril is 10 mg three times a day.with the range of 20-40 mg a day in divided doses. Dosage should not exceed 60 mg a day - use of cyclobenzaprine for periods longer than two or three weeks is not recommended .
