I live in Thailand and am having trouble finding an english speaking doctor who knows something about this condition. My Vit B 12 levels were 49. Regarding folic acid, I am confused as to how much I should take. My doctor is not interested because I have chosen to take B12 tablets, rather than injections, and drugs here are generic and sold over the counter without information. Here are my notes: Folic: I will take 5 mg 3 times daily. Is this overdoing it? Recommendations are all over the place. ‘Folic acid intake from fortified food and supplements should not exceed 1,000 mcg daily for healthy adults’/’unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not consume more than 1,000 mcg of folic acid a day’/‘The recommended daily allowance of folic acid for normal adults ranges from 150 to 180 mcg a day’/Doses of 200 to 500 micrograms daily have been used for enhancing treatment response to antidepressants/Doses of 500 micrograms folic acid or 15-50 milligrams methylenetetrahydrofolate daily, as adjunct treatment with conventional antidepressants/Folate deficiency: The typical dose is 250 to 1,000 micrograms daily/For severe folate deficiency, such as in cases of megaloblastic anemia and malabsorption disorders, 1-5 milligrams (1,000 to 5,000 micrograms) daily is often used until corrected blood tests are documented by a qualified healthcare professional’. My doctor has told me to take 20 mgs a day. That’s 20,000 mcg. Does she know what she is doing? Will the increased folic acid affect my next lot of Vitamin B 12 serum levels? Remember: ‘high serum folate levels might not only mask vitamin B12 deficiency, but could also exacerbate the anemia and worsen the cognitive symptoms associated with vitamin B12 deficiency’.
Folivit: 5 mg: recommended dose 1 – 4 tablets a day
Folic acid: 5 mg: 400 – 800 mcg a day
0.4 – 0.8 mg a day
Advice would be very welcome, please.
