My grandmother used to use Vicks inside her nostrils too and she died with COPD. I dont think the Vicks was the full causative factor but maybe it did have an effect. She had asthma from the time she was in her 30's and she used Vicks inside her nostrils to help her breathe. Pulmonary Fibrosis is scarring in the lungs. There are many reasons that can cause this but much of the time it is idiopathic, meaning they dont really know what causes it.
It will be interesting to see if more people chime in with someone who had it and used vicks that way.
I dont think it hurts you to use it on your chest, it is the putting it in the nostrils and breathing in small droplets of it in your lungs that is dangerous. It says on the jar not to use it up inside the nostrils but people do it anyway.
Hi shelakay, This is interesting. My dad used Vicks for everything and died from COPD and lung cancer. Curious though, do you remember using the Vicks in a vaporizer at night to help you breathe when you had a cold? I wonder if that solution could have been a problem and we didn't know it. My mom used to buy a bottle of liquid Vicks made just for the vaporizer. I don't have any breathing problems, thank goodness, but my dad had the vaporizer going every night. Just saying...

This could answer something for me too. My dad died of copd, and he put vicks in his nose when he was congested for most of his life, but never smoked.
