I have recently went to a behavioral hospital for a few days and they prescribed me Wellbutrin XL (150mg). A couple days after I got out I went to see another psychiatrist and he prescribed me venlafaxine (75mg). He told me not to use the Wellbutrin and to take the venlafaxine because it does the same thing as Wellbutrin only it helps anxiety as well. I was wondering your thoughts on if I took both or which one would be better if am feeling down all the time, stressed, depressed and also have anxiety and not many good thoughts of myself?
Hi, Taylor! Taking Wellbutrin and venlafaxine together carries the risk of a major interaction that can cause seizures. Wellbutrin has not been studied or tested as an anxiolytic and is not generally recommended for anxiety disorders as it can cause further anxiety as a long term side effect.
That being said, and from personal experience, I would recommend Effexor as I found it highly effective for both my depression and anxiety.
Best regards and I hope you're feeling better soon.
Based on my experience and my limited knowledge I would tend to agree with the psychiatrist that prescribed the venlafaxine. Wellbutrin can exacerbate anxiety. But in fairness, 150 mg of wellbutrin is a modest dose and given that it is in extended release form - these two factors would help to mitigate the anxiety typically associated with the drug. The other consideration is that if 75 mg of Venlafaxine is not adequate for addressing your depression, your Doctor can increase your daily dosage in increments of 37.5 mg. With Wellbutrin, the next dosage after 150 mg XL is 300 mg and then you are significantly increasing your risk of anxiety as a side effect.
Good Luck and all the best!
I too have been to a behavior hospital here recently. They put me on wellbutrin too. I think for me it will be a good fit just because for the last 15 years I have been put on anitdepressents that control serotonin and non have ever worked. Wellbutrin controls dopamine so your just have to know what your brain need and doesn't for me it took over 15 years to finally realize what my brain needs, but who knows I have only been on wellbutrin for 3 days. I know my adderral works well for me and it increases dopamine too but without my adderral it is hard for me to be motivated and have energy.
