i would like to know the diference between these 2 drugs
Valproic Acid - can I change my valproate from Epilim to Orfiril iused epilim for 2 years?
Added 4 Feb 2012:
At first thank you for the answer , but i should explain that my son used Epilim for 2 years & i can not find it in my country any more.I discussed with his doctor about Orfiril(Orfiril Saft) she just changed his dose with the new one.unfortunatly i do not know German language but it is written on the box(Natriumvalproat) would you please explain it for me .i have not started orfiril yet.thank you.
Technically Orfiril contains valproic acid and Epilim contains Sodium Valproate. Valproic acid (Orfiril) dissociates to the valproate ion in the gastrointestinal tract, so its effects are virtually identical to valproate (Epilim).
If your epilepsy is well controlled it is not a good idea to switch brands unless it is necessary.
There are risks in changing brands (more seizures and side effects) but these risks are not fully known. For some patients the effects of changing from one type to another are very small.
You should discuss these risks with your doctor.
