I know in the past there were only barbiturates, nowadays you don't hear anything about it, only benzodiazepine.
Barbiturates are habit forming drugs that will cure your anxiety, leaving you with shocking withdrawals. At higher doses it is a euthanasia medication; these days used more for large animal sedation or euthanising stray animals.
Medications in this class are considered dangerous these days and in humans used largely these days as medically sanctioned suicide medication in several European countries.
Benzos are non lethal anti anxiety, anti panic, anti lots of things and have nowhere near the addictive properties that barbiturates have.
