I am having surgery on the 4th of Oct. for my incontinence. Its seems like a quick procedure for a huge problem. It's called TVT and they go through the vagina. Has anyone had this done and can shed some information? Does it help with the leaks? Thanks for all your help
Yes, I have had the urethral sling put in for urinary incontinence and had great success. I have had no spills when sneezing, coughing or otherwise since I had the sling put in. The only problem I had was not tolerating the antibiotic they put me on right after the surgery. Now I know that I can't take the generic of Macrobid. Wish I had known it then. Anyway, it has been several years now and I continue with no problems. Good luck!!
OMG I can not believe you asked this question its a miracle. I just had this procedure done not even a week ago Chrissy. Its called the sling procedure. Well I hope thats what your getting cause there are 2 operations ones a regular mesh procedure and that. The mesh procedure goes through your bladder. But the sling procedure does NOT go through your bladder it actiually go through your urethra and they put the sling there another type of synthetic mesh material to hold your urethra in place cause the muscles there arent doing so well is why your having the incontenece. They make 2 incisions between your legs(1 on each sidenear the vagina) I think the vagina is used to get to the urethra. There is an 85% succes rate for this. but I got a 100% success. The set up is what takes the longest. It is done on an outpatient status in the hospital or at a surgery center wherever your insurance allows it.
First ofcourse your there 2 hrs early to sign paper work and ask if you have a will or power of atterney and stuff. And sign a whole bunch of stuff and put your bracelet on, then your back in the waitin room again for like an hr. Then your you'll begetting ready now for suregery in the back. They put your IV in(hope you have good veins) Your just givin saline solution. The anestitiologist then comes to talk to you but doesn't do anything at that point. Your sitting there for ever how long usually the whole next hour with just the IVin. Your going to be going totally under for this. A nurse is there if you need her. ANd they ask you another serious of questions that are important like if your allergic to latex and stuff like that. The doctor comes in to talk to you first before they do anything so make sure you have ALL your questions you need to ask him then cause you won't remember if you ask him in the precedure room. You have to have someone with you this day cause of the anesitia and risks for safety even to stay overnight at your house. Rarely do you stay in the hospital, you probably won't can't I guess if your insurance allows it and if the doctors says you have to. So make sure you have a family member or a friend available for the whole entire day and into the night,ok. Umm right before they roll you in they give you something to relax you first before the surgey in your IV, I guess vallium or something havent the slightest idea what I got. Then like after 5, 10 min they roll you in the surgery room and transfer you to the bed with extremley high sterupps to put your legs in you may or maynot see it or even remeber them. Then here we go. Anestiaologist gives your anestia and you go to sleep before your legs are up on the sterrups. This is where your not gonna remember anything and before you know it your in the recovery room all groggy and stuff. The peration acually takes 12 to 15 min itself , thats all. They will insert a catheter into your pee hole with somekind of blue stuff in it. U drink some soda or whatever they have. There gonna make you make you I say go to the bathroom and pee into this thingy on the toilet. Now heres the thing now ok. If you CANT pee at all, 1 of the risks already they will send you home with a catheter in you or a do it yourself one. I peed. 3 out of 10 women cant. I dont know how long you'll be wearing one I guess untill your follow up which can be a week. They pick the time and date for your follow up, don't hesitate if its too early or too late to call the office and change it ok. 2nd risk and this depends if they packed you or not, if you were bleeding heavy through your vagina. I wasn't so I didn't get packed with what I dont know, some kind of material. 3rd risk you Will bleed but I guess its up to your body on when it stops. I only bled for 2 days. 4th risk during the surgey they give you antibiotics incase of infection, you will not know if you get anymore antibiotics to get send home with I mean a script. I did, I got keflex. Remember I didnt go home with a foley in me. I was very lucky on this procedure with everything. 5th risk if you can not pee at home you have to let them know so they can give you a cathetor. Now this is gonna sound weird but if your peeing good(you may or may not have blood in your urine) I didn't. the blood was from my urethra and pee pee hole. Remember to where your maxipad not a panty liner please. 6th risk if you find any oozing, green puss out your vagina or pee hole or the 2 incisions, you must I repeat you must try to contact your doctor. If you cant you go imediatley to the ER. I did not have this problem either this all means if you developed an infection or not. You'll have to ask your doctor what happens if your end up in the ER cause I didn't have to go. 7th risk they will only ask you to eat light foods and drinks for the remainde of a 24 hr period due to digestion problem. Next day you can start eating and drinking anything you want. You have to restrain from putting anything up your vagina, no sex, no tampons nothing! until they see you again at the folllow up. Which mine is coming Wednesday. I think I remember you have to where your catheter for the entire week till that appointment, sorry. Ok heres where the pain comes in you will deffenetely feel pain like you rode a horse forever from your legs being so high and spread apart during the operation. And your groin may hurt too. Mine didnt. If you see any type of discharge coming out of your vagina call doctor imediately or go to the ER stat. Umm this may sound extremely weird but one of the side effects is urgency to pee or frequent peeing, this was happening to me and didnt know why cause like hey they just put something in me so I dont pee. If your wearing a catheter at any other time you may leak through it , but I don't know if your suppose to or not now. Ask him or her. umm theres another risk with those insition inbetween your legs any puss or liquid, drainage out of them call your doctor immediatly or go to ER, you have an infection.
DO NOT SCRATCH these areas or you will be in trouble. There is no stiches involved whats so ever in this surgery. They cortorize you like burn you to stop the bleeding on those areas I was mentioniing. Oh shit I was so freaken scared 2 days after cause I thought the mesh was coming out of me, so I went to the doctor and they checked me out and already they said I was healing good. They may tell you to put bacitration or neasporin on the two insions, they are deep holes in your body. The doctor must of told me this but I didn't remember so I got scared. Well nothing turned out to be wrong. Well Im finally done cause I can't tell you anymore what they do on your follow up cause it didnt happen yet. Oh god Im so itchy right now.Id like to sctratch the hell out of it but I can't!
Goodluck my dear and tell me how it went ok. I hope I didn't miss anything. My neck is hurting from looking down on the keyboard so long. Oh they obviously have to go through your vagina to get to your urethra. Oh man I just felt like a doctor just now, hehe, lol. I really hope you don't have any problems like me. I really hope I helped you after everything I wrote.
I had the sling method done 2 yrs. ago and I wish I had never done it, I have worn a pad every since, I lost all the control that I once had and it hasn't gotten any better after all this time. The doctor wanted me to take a bladder pill but they don't mix with all the other medication I take, Ive tried them and they don't agree with me. I'm 74 yrs. old and read good things about this before I had it done, but believe me it doesn't work for everyone. I'm so sick of the whole thing and the accidents I continue to have, I just had knee surgery for torn cartilege and all the medications I had to take made me lost complete control with several accidents, awful and disappointing, had a good doctor, haven't gone back, because I see no further help he can give me except pills, I wish I could get it undone. If someone has a good suggestion for me I would appreciate it. bev35
