Trouble finding a reasonably priced hypertension drug?

I'm having some difficulty in getting my Dr. to find a hypertension med. that I can take. I've take several that either cause me to cough or have light dizziness/lightheadedness. With a little help from someone as yourself I'm trying to find one on my own. I'm starting with a list of generic drugs.
#1. Are there specific reasons based upon ME, my particular level, age, anything else that my Dr. starts me out on a particular drug or would I be pretty much open to take any hypertension drug. If there are restrictions based upon (something that I don't know), what would they be or, IF the Dr. has a very definite reason for prescribing something for me that would be different from his next patient what are these?
Metoprolol is pretty widely used and cheap. Its been used by many without problems. As far as you getting lightheaded any bp med can do that. If you're used to a high pressure and get it back down, when you get up too fast or turn your head too fast you're going to get dizzy. You learn not to do those things. I take Metoprolol and amlodipine. That is also cheap and is widely used. I used to have problems with the lightheadedness, but I'm slower now. lolol
