I am on my 3rd month of being on Tri-Sprintec. Last month I missed one pill but took two the next morning. I had unprotected sex one time but he did not ejaculate inside of me. My period was very light the week I had it. Just a little spotty for a day or so(worried that it was implantation) This month we have had sex plenty of times with a condom and I have been taking the pill religiously at roughly 7:45 to 8 am everyday with one dis recently being at 11:30 am. My period is supposed to come this week but I haven't had it yet and I'm worried I'm pregnant. I've read that it is normal to miss a period or for it to be late on the pill but I'm still worried. Thanks
Dont get worried just yet, your period can come any time on your week of inactive pills, even the very last day and on occasion you might miss a period or only have a bit of light spotting (for many women, when they have been on birth control pills a while, their periods become very very light and some lucky women just have a bit of light spotting and that is all they get every month because the Pill decreases the formation of the uterine lining that builds up and sheds each month as our "period"), just keep taking your pills as you have been. If you miss two periods in a row however, you should test for pregnancy. Missing one pill is very unlikely to affect your contraception and you did right by taking two the next day exactly as you are supposed to AND you are taking them on time so it is VERY doubtful that you are pregnant. One word of advice though, it always worries me when women mention "he didnt ejaculate (or whatever words they choose) inside me". Sperm is present all through the sex act, not just at ejaculation, if he penetrated at all, there is a possibility of being exposed to sperm and it only takes one so NEVER rely on withdrawal as some kind of "extra" protection or back up because it doesnt work that way. Yes, the majority of sperm comes (no pun intended) with ejaculation but as I mentioned, one can be enough to get you pregnant in the right conditions and men wont feel, see or control this leakage of sperm during sex but you can count on it being there. Not that I think that has any bearing on your situation now, I just wanted to caution you against that type of thinking for the future. If you feel you may need back up protection, you need to use a condom, preferably with spermicide, from start to finish because any penetration can expose you to sperm. Birth control pills, when taken correctly, are all the protection you need against pregnancy, clinics and GYN's (especially clinics) really stress the use of condoms with the Pill, this is NOT for contraception-your Pill is doing that-it is for STD protection (with the exception of your very first week of your very first pack then they are for back up until the Pill can begin working but you are all past that). The Pill is 99.9% effective when taken every day, at approx the same time of day, so it provides all the protection you need. If you are with one partner and he is faithful to you and you are both infection/disease free then really no condom is necessary when taking the Pill UNLESS you forget pills or you start taking antibiotics. Some, not all, antibiotics have been known to decrease the effectiveness of hormonal birth control so rather than try to remember which antibiotics do affect the Pill, just treat ALL antibiotics as if they do and for this you should use back up protection (condoms and spermicide are best-NOT Plan B-Plan B is the same type of hormone medication as birth control pills so it stands to reason that Plan B is likely to be affected by antibiotics too they just really havent studied this interaction much) so use condoms and spermicide the entire course of the antibiotics and for seven more days after you finish the last antibiotic pill (or, of course, you can abstain if you wish). Other than times like that when you do need back up protection, condoms are to prevent STD's and are unnecessary with the Pill for contraceptive purposes in a manogamous (having sex only with each other) couple. So no worries for you! :)
