My Mother is 76. She has COPD/emphysema and coughs constantly. She is also a heart patient on Coreg and Cardura (5 bypasses). She also has some arthritis. Her pulmonologist prescribed 50 mg Tramadol twice a day,Zoloft (for depression) and 5 mg Prednisone. She alleges this helped reduce the cough. She has since had hip surgery and was further prescribed (by another doctor) Zanax (anxiety to cough). She is now home recovering and not in pain any longer. I find she if confused, forgetful, sounds drugged and sleeps too much. Is there too much interaction with Tramadol/Zanax and/or Zoloft?
What you are describing is a COPD patient who just had major surgery. The prednisone does help her cough. I find it hard to believe that a person with COPD and one recovering from hip surgery, has no pain. Most COPD patients at some point end up with pain, and hip surgery takes alot out of a healthy person. Tramadol doesn't make you sleepy, and the fact that the same dr prescribed both makes me feel better about it. How much is she on? I have seen many older people after surgery on their hip, and a good many of them were effected by the anesthesia, mentally, for about 6 mos after surgery.
The combination of the Xanax and the Tramadol may be sedating her. I would be more apt to give her the Tramadol since she recently has surgery than the Xanax. I would give the Xanax only if she seems very anxious. Prednisone will help reduce cough in a COPD patient. 50mg of tramadol is a very small dose. You dont say the dose of Xanax but you might try holding the Xanax for a bit to see if she is less sedated.
