Topiramate - I do not have migraines at all, yet my M. D. prescribed Toprimate. Is this?
Added 9 Jan 2016:
I do take another very mild med for the chronic headaches, but I have done this with success for over 25 years. This was my first appointment with this M. D. so I don't know why such an aggressive approach was taken.
pbrooks; Yes this is used for many different things but you might want to check with the doctor and see why he or she changed it if you were not having any problems Did the doctor tell you to stop the other medication or were you taking something else.Anyway this really sounds like a good question for your doctor because if you don't need to be taking this medication I would not. good luck just put a call into the doctor. Hi pbrooks1150! Just throwing this out there because I had been given Toprimate by 2 different doctors to "help with losing weight". I've also heard others say the same thing. It does help curb appetite and weight loss is a side effect of the med. But, I would be sure to check with doctor about reason he put you on it. Way too often doctors go script writing happy and will just write away. Patients don't always think to ask about meds until they may began to have reactions or other issues with them. Please follow up with your doctor about this and any other meds you are unsure of. Shorty57
If you have had chronic headaches for years now and take another med to manage the pain (whether it be regular Tylenol or a narcotic RX) your doctor may be concerned that you are getting Medication Overuse Headache (MOH) if you have been taking that medication often. That term, by no means, is insinuating you are taking more of the pain med than recommended by your doctor or misusing it in any way. If you aren't familiar with MOH, please Google the term, as you may be very surprised!
I have Chronic Migraine and MOH is actually not hard to acquire at all. Has happened to me with Ibuprofen, even. Anyone, especially someone with a headache disorder, can suffer rebound headaches from pain medications and get stuck in a nasty cycle.
Just another point of view for you.
However, my best recommendation is to call your doctor's office as soon as possible and let them know you have some questions about your new Rx &. were not fully informed as to why the doc recently rx'ed you Topamax -- just get a straight answer from the source. It may be more important than you think!
