58 year old bipolar with chronic history of depressive symptoms predominating. Hospiliazed 4 times over 20 years for mania.
Hi, C! It's not unusual to be prescribed a central nervous stimulant in severe cases of Bipolar depression for short term use. I'm currently taking Ritalin 10mg BID for the same reasons and because it's somewhat less habituating than the amphetamines. I'd prefer to be back on Nuvigil/Provigil which are Class 4 substances, but they have yet to be approved for this use ~ you have to be diagnosed with narcolepsy or sleep apnea or most insurances won't pay.
I'd be alert for any signs of an impending hypo/manic episode, though.
Best regards, Wildcat
