Because its one of the drugs that you have to maintain a certain level for it to be therapeutic yet not too much.

While the levels of this drug in the blood is good to know, the primary reason for the blood tests is to monitor liver function. About 7% of the population can have negative liver and bone marrow reactions to this drug. The good thing is that 93% of people have no problems at all and any reactions are usually occur early on in taking it and occur in the first 4 weeks.
