Just wondering if anyone has heard of years of high doses of tegretol causing phychosis & mental changes. My son's neurologist seems to think this is maybe the reason for this happening to him as he has been taking 3000 mg of this dose daily for a lot of years and last year developed this problem ..he is 41 yrs old..Anyone with any insight on this would be much appreciated..Thank you
My dad has been taking Tegretol for 7 years due to a grand mal and now petit mal seizures. His life was hell on Tegretol. Very drowsy, legs were so weak he couldn't walk... then one day his insurance approved the Tegretol XR and he's a new man. He's on large doses of Tegretol also. Never had any delusions, just the physical stuff, but the XR has totally gotten ridden of that.
But I must say one thing: I know that one time he was in the hospital and the staff accidently gave him double his dose of Tegretol. We all thought he had a stroke... he was incoherent, like a drunk, talking about things that weren't there, not making sense. They took him for a CAT scan but it came back normal of course because the reason he was acting that way was the overdose. Has your son OD some how? just a thought... cathleen
I can't say that about tegertol but I have to be honest I had a bad reaction to tegertol I could not see out of my right eye for about a week and I couldn't walk a straight line, they discontinued the medication and all those effects wore off I don't like to say bad about a medicine because what will work for one person will maybe not do the same for another, it's an individual thing but I am sure Tegertol does help lots of people just doesn't work with me
I read your story about your son below and my heart was really touched at one time in my life I was placed on Tegertol at the time I was hospitalized and had ben in critical care for having one seizure after the other once they stabalized me and got me to the floor they decided to try me on Tegertol, what an experience, I lost the vision in my right eye and could not focus normally with the other eye, my family came to visit I was in Indianapolis the hospital there (we live in another part of Indiana but was taken there I was so terribly sick) once my family came in and noticed I couldn't walk a straight line they went over to the medical building across the street and told my doctor at that time they wanted him to see me, the nurses hadn;t notified him of these problems so needless to say when he came into my room he asked whats going on here? why wasn't I called?
one thing I know for sure no matter the age parents love their children older or younger and will do what they have to, I was having a horrible reaction to Tegertol, I never like to say this or that is not good because people are so different in so many ways but it is something I don't think I will forget, I was scared and after about a week off this things returned to normal but needless to say I would never want to take another dose of Tegertol, I care deeply about the problems that you encounter and wish I could in some way be of help to you the thing I can do is remember each one of you in my prayers and I hope that things improve for you and your son reading what you wrote spoke to my heart it takes special people to endure what you do I feel honored to know about you God bless caringsonbj (Billy)
