... given Reglan In the ER and immediately displayed extrapyramidal symptoms. My doctor immediately thought of TD but I didn't display all the symptoms. My neurologist says I have akathisia, however my symptoms have morphed into TD symptoms. I don't know what to do. Trying to get a second opinion with a specialist. Trying to get by on clonazapam. Im very frustrated. Has anyone had to see several doctors before being diagnosed? Any help would be appreciated
Yes, I've been diagnosed with TD as of June of this year. Mine is a result of long-term use of prescription anti-psychotics. I needed to see my regular MD, who sent me to a neurologist, who sent his results to my regular psychiatrist. So, to answer your question, I had to seek out 3 docs to get my diagnosis. I've done quite a bit of research on treating TD, and clonazepam is one of the drugs being talked about. However, clonazepam is a benzodiazepine that is very addictive. Withdrawal from a benzo can take a long time and can be quite painful, even dangerous. You don't want to swap one problem for another, so be sure your doc knows what he/she is doing. I'm not a doctor, but from what I've read (and from a fellow TD sufferer) short term use of clonazepam appears to somewhat work, without resulting in benzo dependency. Clonazepam will certainly relieve your anxiety about the symptoms.
My psych has tried a number of remediating treatments (including clonazepam) and has settled on amantadine. This drug seems to be ameliorating the symptoms, so for now, I'm happy... well, as happy as I can be with having TD.
There is so little known about TD that it is commonly misdiagnosed. My mom has has it for 8-9 years and it took more than two years to diagnose. Get yourself to a neurologist that specializes in movement disorder right away! If you are in the Midwest I have a great doctor for you.
