Focalin XR is dexmethylphenidate which is a stimulant medication or what they called "speed" back in my high school days-probably yours too since we both have high school aged kids. It is not a "narcotic" or an opioid like morphine. It IS a controlled substance drug however, a Schedule 2, which is the most highly controlled of the medically used substances. Morphine and oxycodone are also both Schedule 2 drugs and I think that is the point my friend kaismama meant, but I wanted to clarify that it is a very different drug from opioids like oxycodone and morphine. Focalin is very similar to Ritalin (methylphenidate). It is prescribed as a treatment for ADHD, but kids without ADHD like to take it for the high. It can cause euphoric feelings, false confidence, and it reduces tiredness and allows extreme focus. Stimulants work differently in the ADHD brain so they dont get quite the same effects as a non-ADHD person does. Non-ADHD kids like to use this kind of medication to cram for tests. They are very hyper and hyper focused and it makes studying a lot of material easier. It keeps them from being tired so if they were out all night partying the night before, they could take Focalin and function extremely well on little or no sleep. Many times kids will use it after they have used opioids so the opioids dont make them sleepy. They can take this drug and be able to do more physical and mental tasks easier. Girls like to use it to help them lose weight since it also supresses the appetite and raises metabolism. There are many reasons kids like to take "speed" or "uppers" as they were called back in our day. This drug is very habit forming though and is not always safe unless it is given under a Drs supervision. A Dr prescribing this drug would be certain that there are no underlying heart problems for instance, as this drug can increase the heart rate and blood pressure. Children with ADHD are monitored closely and kept to certain doses where kids who are abusing it are not monitored and often use more than the recommended amount. Impress upon your daughter how dangerous drugs can be when people take them without a Drs supervision, not to mention that taking medications that were not prescribed for you is a federal offense and you can go to jail for giving away or selling medications or for taking medications not prescribed by a physician. This medication can be deadly in high doses or for persons with heart problems (and they may not even know they have these heart problems). Fooling around with drugs, even ones used by prescription, is never a good idea unless they are prescribed specifically for you by a qualified Dr.
