I suffered a stroke in Feb. 2009 and have been on the medication ever since. I currently am taking 500 mg twice a day. My doctor has just recently told me it is ok to have a glass or two every night but want a second opinion.
I am currently taking Valproic Acid and would like to know if I am able to drink Red Wine?

I have never suffered from a seizure nor do I drink, but would like to have a glass of wine every now and then with dinner.
There is 1 alcohol/food/lifestyle interaction with valproic acid:
valproic acid ↔ Alcohol (Ethanol)
Moderate Drug Interaction
Using valproic acid together with ethanol can increase nervous system side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with valproic acid. Do not use more than the recommended dose of valproic acid, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medication without first talking to your doctor.
I just read through the professional side of Valproic Acid. I strongly urge you to talk to your doctor if you have any questions. If you truly need a second opinion, get it from another doctor. There are a number of liver, renal, pancreatic and other issues that a doctor needs to consider, especially if you had any issues with any of these areas ever in your life.
