My husband was diagnosed with severe hypothyroid and prescribed Synthroid, he has been taking it as prescribed with water only and no food for 30 minutes first thing in the morning. He is still is having a hard time staying awake and his brain is really foggy. I know it takes a while to fully be effective but how long till some improvement is seen?
He should have another appointment to have it checked with in three to six months, the blood test will tell the Doctor if med needs to be higher or lower, as for your question it takes time at least three months and six is even better, if your worried give his Doctor a call it couldn't hurt.
Hi! I agree, it can take a while, not only for the medicine to work and for him to feel better, but it takes a while for you (him) and dr to get him to his optimal dose. I think a lot of us can really relate & it's frustrating & difficult to be patient! All we wanna do is feel better! It will happen, he may need to adjust doses for a bit to see how he responds, typically they start u off slow to watch for any adverse reactions. My doc also does every 3 months, which is a long time to wait when u have been feeling terrible for a long time already! Starting the meds is the first step! U can also research vitamins & minerals in the meantime, I googled 'which supplements help keep the thyroid healthy' and got about the top 5 I needed, while I've been waiting to find my optimal dose. It's helped me a lot with lack of energy and that lathargic feeling he must have. U could try that while he goes through dose adjustments.
Or like previous person said, call the dr now, they do usually wanna see the blood work before changing doses, but u never know! Good luck, it will get better!
Hi AdarableHair! I found out I had hypothyroidism over 15 years ago. I was first given Synthroid to treat it. I didn't like it. I never felt better on it. So I went to a doctor in my area whose specialty is treating hypothyroidism and started taking Nature-Throid which is a natural bio-equivalent of the thyroid hormone that our bodies produce. Unlike synthroid, which only contains synthetic T4, nature-throid also contains T3, T2, and T1, which helps the body to better assimilate the T4. This also helps to treat the depression and other things that are caused by having a hypothyroidism problem. It helps with the fatigue and brain fog also. It's the best medication I have found for the treatment of this condition. I would never take synthroid again. It might take about 4 weeks to reach a steady blood level, but then your husband should see a difference and get relief. "G"
